How many people kick off their career journeys as interns? Well, at the HZICC, quite a few team members started right here as interns! The internship program at HZICC has been up and running for nearly a year now, and it’s finally got an official name: the “Sailing Program”.
You might have guessed it--“Sailing (Yunfan)” comes from the famous line by the great poet Li Bai: “One day I'll skim the waves, blown by the wind. With sails hoisted high, across the vast ocean.” We hope that all interns will hold fast to their lofty dreams and sail far in the vast world of international communication.
Since the program launched, we’ve received hundreds of applications via E-mail. Dozens of talented individuals have already made their mark--or are currently doing so--at HZICC. Among them are international students from overseas, soon-to-be graduates from top universities (both undergrads and postgrads), hailing from diverse backgrounds and multiple nationalities. Some share Hangzhoufeel with the world through multilingual reporting, others break cultural barriers with creative short videos, and many bring their ingenuity and flair to design innovative platforms and mediums for cross-cultural communication.
How do interns at the HZICC gain experience and grow professionally? Here’s what these young communicators have to say!
During my internship at the HZICC, I had the privilege of diving into real-world tasks, especially interviewing foreigners visiting China. I learned that interviewing isn’t just about asking questions--it’s about listening closely and capturing the emotions and details in their stories. Through these conversations, I didn’t just uncover their personal experiences and perspectives; I also broadened my own horizons, gaining a deeper understanding of both the differences and commonalities across cultures. From selecting key content to structuring articles and polishing the final draft, every step demanded a strong sense of responsibility and meticulous attention to detail.
-- Goh Qing (Malaysia)
Interning as a bilingual editor and reporter at HZICC was incredibly rewarding and gave me a richer understanding of communication work. Conducting independent interviews with Americans in Hangzhou and writing feature stories that earned praise and shares from the interviewees showed me the value of telling stories with heart and soul. Translating news articles and pieces about the 24 solar terms--chewing over every word and refining each phrase--helped me sharpen my language skills. Working on video production and editing, perfecting every frame and second, expanded my practical abilities. I also had the chance to manage international volunteers for the “Long-Legged Uncle” charity project, witnessing firsthand the inclusivity and warmth that transcends borders and generations.
