British sinologist James Trapp has described Western narratives about China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region as unfounded after finally realizing his 40-year dream of visiting the region. During his trip, he experienced Xinjiang’s cultural heritage and modern development firsthand, noting the widespread use of bilingual signals (Chinese characters and Uygur), the blend of tradition and modernity, and the hospitality of local communities.
Trapp stated that Western impressions, especially in the UK, remain outdated and do not reflect reality. “It seems to me very relaxed. It's very open,” he said. He also expressed regret that some view the Belt and Road Initiative as a threat, calling the misconception “sad.”
