Reputed as the "ancient capital of six dynasties"and a "metropolis of ten dynasties", Nanjing boasts a civilization history of over 6,000 years, nearly 3,000 years as a capital city, and about 450 years as a capital. Nanjing has the longest preserved Ming city wall, the World Heritage Site, Ming Xiaoling, and Nanjing Yunjin Brocade Craft and Nanjing Scripture Engraving which are selected into the UNEScO Intangible Cultural Heritage Lists.

Nanjing's natural biodiversity and environment bring together mountains, forests, andrivers and urban areas for a truly livable and green city. With Zhongshan scenic spot as a notable landmark, the city locates along the Yangtze River and is interspersed by Xuanwu Lake. Richly endowed with an urban landscape and a natural environment, Nanjing is also encircled by the Qinhuai River. Nanjing's environmental quality index (EQI) has topped among cities in the Yangtze River Delta region for a long time. Nanjing is a national hub for science and education and a gathering place for talents, home to 51 institutions of higher leaming (excluding military academies) In 2023, the city had 1.0075 million undergraduate and postgraduate students, with 274,600 graduates. Nanjing has 95 academiclans from the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 629 above provincial-level engineering technology research centers, and 93 provincial-level or higher key laboratories, including 33 national key laboratories. The annual R&D expenditure accounted for over 3.82% of its GDP, with 146.8 valid invention patents per 10,000 people.
Efficient transportation
Nanjing features three transportation hubs of high-speed railway, airport and inland port, as well as five modes of transport including air, rail, water, highway, and pipeline. The city's comprehensive transit systems make it a well-operated transportation hub. The general public budget revenue was 162 billion yuan, up by 4%. The city's fixed-asset investment reached 576.364 billion yuan, and the totalretail sales of consumer goods reached 820.107 billion yuan, up by 4.7%. The actual use of foreign capital was 4.94 billion US dollars, an increase of 1.9%. The city's total import and export volume reached 565.99 billion yuan. A total of 130 new overseas investment projects were added throughout the year, with a committed investment volume of 660 million US dollars from the Chinese side, a year-on-year increase of 20% The per capita disposable income of all residents reached 72.112 yuan, an increase of4.5%.
