Self Describition:Educational Philosophy

My main educational philosophy is to inspire my students to love learning and to be passionate about understanding how the world works around them. I believe students would learn far more if they were motivated to take control of their own learning with a little guidance than giving perfect lessons on topics the students have little interest in.

This is particularly easy to do with teaching economics because economics theories are relatable and most daily news and politics can be put into context with economics. In addition, learning economics helps students to learn to think more rationally and most would learn to appreciate modelling and work through problems logically as a valuable skill even outside their academic studies.

For most of my classes I would try spend extra time either to put theories into context or to give back stories on their history to inspire their interest in the subject. I have included a youtube video below for one of my iGCSE class as an example:

In terms of the delivery of lessons, my main style is to elicit rather than tell my students the answers directly. I have found it really effective in terms of creating interest and for the students to remember the answers if it came from them. I also like the students to do as much board work as possible when learning graphs.

My lesson structure usually starts with a quick recap of key learning objectives from last lesson, teach lesson content, give out exercises then finish with recap of the lesson objectives. My lessons are delivered though powerpoints as it cuts down teaching time quite significantly especially for those lessons that require graphs. I have attached samples of my powerpoints to this application.

For my iGCSE classes, I tend to include quite a lot of 3 minutes discussions as the students would be able to come up with answers to many of the topics themselves. Whereas for A level classes, I tend to have longer teaching talk time since many topics are not as easy and to include more videos.
